Working together, with trust and respect, to make a difference
Public Health Wales ambition is to achieve a healthier future for Wales. It’s a vision we share with our stakeholders. We can only achieve it by working together.
Public Health Wales provides an expert public health resource. Led by an influential Board, with about 1,700 staff, including 80 at consultant level or above, our budget is about £106 million.
Our purpose is to give people power to protect and improve health and wellbeing and to reduce inequities. We do this by informing, advising and speaking up for them.
We work locally and nationally and, in particular, we support the Directors of Public Health as part of an integrated public health system in Wales. Together, we support the NHS, local government and others.
We provide the public health knowledge, scientific expertise and intelligence to lead change. We provide the intellectual challenge to make sure public services focus on delivering health improvement and reducing inequality. We run screening, health and healthcare improvement programmes. And we provide microbiology and other health protection services.
Health and local government are among the devolved issues in Wales so, working nationally and locally, Public Health Wales has access to both policy levers and local delivery systems.
We are committed to fair, transparent recruitment and believe in equality of opportunity in our workplace and will not tolerate discrimination on grounds of age, disability, gender identity, religion or belief, race or nationality, marriage or civil partnership status, sex, sexual orientation, working pattern, caring responsibilities, trade union activity or political beliefs – or on any other grounds.
